Sunflowers and Calendulas: Flowers in your Skincare

Who doesn’t love flowers? The two golden flowers: sunflowers and calendulas are well known in the skincare and beauty industry to be beneficial for your skin and body.

Sunflower oil, when used topically on the skin, offers numerous benefits for improving skin health. According to the article titled, "Effect of Sunflower Seed Oil Moisturizer Creams on Transepidermal Water Loss in Atopic Dermatitis Pediatric Patients" by the Faculty of Medicine at the Universitas Padjadjaran, sunflower oil is a natural ingredient that is increasingly being incorporated into moisturizing creams due to its believed safety and gentleness, making it appealing to health-conscious consumers.

One of the primary advantages of sunflower oil is its emollient properties. Emollients are moisturizers that contain lipids and oils, which contribute to enhancing the softness of the skin and providing hydration. Sunflower oil acts as an effective emollient, helping to lock in moisture and prevent trans-epidermal water loss. This is particularly beneficial for individuals with dry skin or conditions such as atopic dermatitis, or psoriasis as sunflower oil provides a natural barrier to the skin. It helps to alleviate dryness and soothe irritated skin.

Another noteworthy aspect of sunflower oil is its composition of essential fatty acids (EFAs). EFAs are crucial for maintaining healthy skin, and sunflower oil is a rich source of these beneficial fatty acids. The EFAs present in sunflower oil, such as linoleic acid, have been shown to possess anti-inflammatory properties. This makes sunflower oil a potentially effective ingredient in the treatment of various skin disorders characterized by inflammation. By incorporating sunflower oil into moisturizing creams, it is believed to contribute to the reduction of inflammation and promote overall skin health.

Calendulas, according to American College of Healthcare Sciences (2020), may:

  • Soothe and soften the skin

  • Prevent rashes

  • Regenerate the skin by assisting cell rejuvenation

  • Reduce inflammation

  • Speed healing burns, bruises and cuts

  • Prevent dry skin and wrinkles

  • Reduce the appearance of scars

  • Soothe mouth sores

  • Prevent and repair photo-damage

Calendula has healing properties to the skin and sunflower oil moisturizes and softens the skin, both calendula and sunflower oil are both gentle and effective ingredients that maintain and restore healthy skin.
