Want to Protect Yourself From Skin Cancer? Use Sunscreen!

With spring coming soon, that means the sun is out and who doesn't want to enjoy a fun day in the sun? But that also means the sun's harmful rays will be shining down! Protect yourself with a daily application of sunscreen.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, sunscreen be used can help prevent skin cancer by protecting you from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Anyone can get skin cancer, regardless of age, gender, or skin tone and about one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Sunscreen can also help prevent premature skin aging, such as wrinkles and age spots, caused by too much-unprotected UV exposure.

Sunscreen should be applied at least 15 minutes before going outdoors and reapplied every two hours while outdoors. For the average adult, an ounce is the needed amount to cover your entire body. Don't forget about the tops of your feet, your neck, your ears, your lips, and the top of your head!

In addition to sunscreen, it is recommended you take these steps:

  • Seek Shade

  • Wear Sun Protective Clothing

  • Avoid Tanning beds

  • Use Extra Caution Near Water, Snow, and Sand

How to Protect Your Baby From the Sun:

  • Avoid exposing children 6 months and younger to the sun's rays

  • Keep them in the shade

  • Dress them in long sleeves, pants, and wide-brim hats

  • For children older than 6 months, use sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to protect their sensitive skin

  • Only Zinc Oxide is allowed by the FDA to use on babies under 6 months old

Chemical vs. Physical Sunscreens

Chemical sunscreens absorb the sun’s rays and tend easier to rub into the skin without leaving a white “cast”.

Physical sunscreen sits on the surface of your skin and deflects the sun’s rays. The American Academy of Dermatology Association recommends this type of sunscreen if you have sensitive skin.

Here at Lemyka, our sunscreens are made with zinc oxide since it is best for sensitive skin. We use 21% of ZnO in each of our sun lotions, making it one of the highest ZnO-containing sunscreens on the market. Since we use zinc oxide as the active ingredient, it is safe for children of all ages, unlike other sunscreens. LEMYKA UV Shield moisturizer is a lotion-like sunscreen that is lightweight and breathable. It is ideal for daily use for anyone with eczema, rosacea, dry, or sensitive skin. It goes on the skin easily and does not leave a white residue. Our sunscreens contain no chemical filters, parabens, or harsh chemicals. It is gentle on even the most delicate skin.
