Is soap the same thing as wash?

Have you ever wondered if soap and body wash are the same thing? Can you interchange them with one another? The answer is generally no, but varies depending on the product. Here’s why:

Soap generally has a higher pH, making it harsher to use on the skin. They can easily remove essential oils and proteins found on the surface of the skin that maintain your moisture barrier, allowing the skin to feel comfortable. By using soap, mainly  bar soap, all over the body, you risk the chance of over cleansing and causing dry, irritated skin. Even if it starts from organic oil such as organic coconut oil, or organic palm oil, the end result is that it has higher pH value. However, it is important to note that not all soaps are made equally. Certain products can contain ingredients such as glycerin that help to keep skin hydrated.

Body wash, on the other hand, is more likely to be in liquid form. It is likely to be more mild if it does not contain ingredients such as sodium lauryl sulfate. They are usually made with emollients which act to hydrate and moisturize. Though they might not cleanse as well as a typical soap, they will leave your skin feeling much more comfortable, especially if being used over large portions of the body.

At the end of the day, each product is made differently. If you are concerned about what product you are using for a large portion of your body, always read the ingredient list to watch out for any harsh chemicals, preservatives, dyes, or fragrances that could irritate sensitive skin. If you are looking for a gentle body wash, LEMYKA’ Shampoo and Wash is a natural formula that effectively removes dirt and oil without drying out the skin.
