Harmful Effects of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

Why we do NOT use Sodium Lauryl Sulfate in our products

Sodium lauryl sulfate, commonly seen as SLS labeled on skincare products, is a harmful product for the skin because according to a NIH 2015 Article, sodium lauryl sulfate causes is known to cause severe eye damage and possible blindness. Another study done in 1987 by the Journal of Biological Chemistry reports that usage of SLS is also linked to developments of cataracts.

Another study conducted a 24-hour exposure to a 1–2% solution of SLS and it showed that it increased the “transepidermal water loss of the stratum corneum – the outer most layer of the skin – and cause[d] mild yet reversible skin inflammation.”  Furthermore, SLS is extremely corrosive to the skin. According to the NIH 2015 study, “corrosive chemicals are those that cause irreversible damage or destruction of the skin as a result of direct skin contact.”

Therefore, LEMYKA does not use SLS in its products in order to ensure the safety of our customers and especially those who use on sensitive skin, baby’s skin, or those who are pregnant.
