Woman applying what seems to be salicylic acid to her face

Salicylic acid is a type of beta hydroxy acid, meaning that it is a gentle exfoliating properties. It helps reduce acne by clearing impurities from the skin’s surface to keep pores clear. This acid works by dissolving the bonds that hold together dead skin cells and other debris.

Since it is very gentle, this acid is suitable for multiple skin types, and can usually be found in various over-the-counter products. It is particularly effective with mild acne, such as blackheads and whiteheads, and can also prevent future breakouts by penetrating the skin to dissolve pore-clogging dead skin cells. Research shows that skin care products containing 0.5% to 2% salicylic acid, whether you leave them on the skin or rinse them off, were best for anti-acne results.

Salicylic acid can come in various strengths and forms such as creams, lotions, gels, etc. It can be used daily or a few times a week, depending on your needs. When starting treatment, apply less product at first to allow your skin to adjust and prevent dryness or irritation. Then, gradually apply more product each time. Generally, apply less if your skin seems to react in this way. Additionally, conduct a patch test of this product for three days before seriously using it, to ensure no reaction or discomfort occurs from using this ingredient!
