Calendula Health and Skin Benefits

What is Calendula?

Calendula is more than a pretty flower –  this plant derived from the marigold family has gained attention as an anti-inflammatory and itch relief agent. With its ability to provide redness relief, calendula has become a popular topical solution for various skin conditions. But what exactly makes calendula so special?

Containing numerous polyphenolic antioxidants, calendula has been extensively studied both in the laboratory and clinical settings for its potential use in treating and preventing radiation-induced skin toxicity. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) stated that calendula is a topical agent derived from the marigold family that exhibits anti-inflammatory properties and provides relief from itching and redness (NIH, 2015). Laboratory experiments have shown promising results, supporting the mechanism of action of calendula in preventing radiation-induced skin toxicity.

Main Benefits:

According to an article by the American College of Healthcare Sciences (2020), calendula:

  • Soothe and soften the skin

  • Prevent rashes

  • Regenerate the skin by assisting cell rejuvenation

  • Reduce inflammation

  • Speed healing burns, bruises and cuts

  • Prevent dry skin and wrinkles

  • Reduce the appearance of scars

  • Soothe mouth sores

  • Prevent and repair photo-damage

In addition to these healing properties, calendula’s benefits extend even beyond the skin as it is known to soothe mouth sores and aid in the prevention and repair of photo-damage caused by excessive sun exposure.

One popular form of calendula is calendula-infused oil, which can be used directly or as an ingredient in ointments and creams. This versatile oil is particularly useful during winter months when dry, chapped lips and skin are common. It not only provides relief from dryness but also acts as a protective barrier against photo-damage and photo-aging when spending time in the summer sunshine. Moreover, calendula-infused oil comes to the rescue for unexpected insect bites, stings, and scrapes, soothing the affected areas and promoting healing.
