Harmful Effects of Methylisothiazolinone (MI)

Why we do NOT use Methylisothiazolinone in our products

Methylisothiazolinone (MI) is a synthetic preservative commonly found in various cosmetic and personal care products, including shampoos, lotions, soaps, and makeup. While it serves as an effective antimicrobial agent, its potential to cause skin allergies and sensitization has raised alarm among researchers and dermatologists.

A study conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2020 shed light on the significant causal role of isothiazolinones, particularly MI, in contact allergies. The study revealed that MI has strongly allergenic properties and often triggers severe inflammatory reactions when tested in patch tests. These findings highlight the potential harm that MI can cause to individuals who are sensitized to this chemical.

In another study analyzing a large sample of 28,922 patch tests conducted between 2009 and 2012, researchers observed a concerning increase in MI sensitization. The prevalence of MI sensitization rose from 1.94% in 2009 to 6.02% in 2012, indicating a notable upward trend. Interestingly, the increase was predominantly driven by female patients aged 40 years and above, patients with facial dermatitis, and those who reported the use of cosmetics.
The rise in MI sensitization is particularly worrisome because it indicates an increasing number of individuals who are at risk of developing adverse reactions to products containing this preservative. Contact dermatitis, characterized by symptoms such as redness, itching, swelling, and even blistering, is one of the common skin reactions associated with MI sensitization. These reactions can be uncomfortable, painful, and significantly impact an individual's quality of life.

Given the potential harm associated with MI, individuals who are prone to skin allergies or have sensitive skin should exercise caution when using products that contain this preservative.
Therefore, LEMYKA does not use methylisothiazolinone in its products in order to ensure the safety of our customers and especially those who use on sensitive skin, baby’s skin, or those who are pregnant.
